Student Contest

The 9th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Contest is a major part of the Kettering/Oakwood Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast Celebration, which is open to all students in the cities of Kettering and Oakwood. The joint Kettering-Oakwood breakfast celebration will take place January 16, 2012 at Christ United Methodist Church.
The Student Contest again is a highlight of the celebration. The theme of the celebration is: Living the Dream
Entering the Contest
The contest asks students to answer these questions:
- How does Dr. King’s message have meaning in your life?
- What active response do you make to his vision and message?
Entry forms for the Student Contest will be available at all schools and at the Oakwood Community Center on October 1, 2011.
The deadline for entries is December 1, 2011. Cash prizes are awarded at the breakfast celebration for first, second and third place and three honorable metnions in each age group and each category. Winners are encouraged to be there to receive their prize.
Ways to Participate
Demonstrate Dr. King’s goals and ideals through the following categories for each age group:
Visual Arts
Depict your idea of “Living the Dream” with drawings, paintings, photography, digital designs, computer generated art, needlework, pastels, or sculptures.
Written Expression
Write about “Living the Dream.” This can be expressed with an essay, a poem, or a report. Original song lyrics, speech, scripts.
Performing Arts
Express yourself regarding “Living the Dream.” This can be through acting, dancing, singing, musical instruments, or dramatic reading. use your imagination and creativity.
Community Service
Act out “Living the Dream” by reaching out and communicating with others through service or a project. Report your activities in writing, pictures, or video.
